Modalities and Submodalities

“All our experiences-our mememories and plans, hopes and fears, values and decisions, etc.-are composed of the building blocks of sensory experience.”

Modality:      5 Major ones

        Visual  (sights)

        Auditory (sounds)

        Kinesthetic (feelings)

        Olfactory (smells)

        Gustatory (tastes)

Close your eyes and recall a very special place to you.  What does it look like?  How intense would you say the view of this place is in your mind?

Submodality:

-Each Dominant Modality is Composed of multiple Submodalities.

-Completely independent of the content of the image or sound.

-Experienced by shifting inward or outward.

Now, using the above experience, now move the image of that place farther away from you until you can just faintly see it in your mind’s eye.  What does it feel like now?

 -Associated Experience:  the first example

  • As if you are reliving the event.

  -Dissociated:  the second example

  • Taking yourself out of the picture, you can more easily see how your behavior affects others and yourself.
